Teen Actor Turned Evangelical Christian, Kirk Cameron,Takes A Swipe At “Kooky” Scientology

I remember watching the sitcom “Growing Pains” as a teen and having a HUGE crush on Kirk Cameron. Don’t look at me like that, most girls my age did (including my five years older sister!). Then I found out he went all religious fundamentalist on me and that was the end of that. It’s kind of hard to feel lustful passion for a guy who frowns on unmarried lustful passion.

In a ContactMusic article, Kirk has very few nice things to say about Tom Cruise’s religion, Scientology:

“I think Scientology is kooky. I think L. Ron Hubbard had some imaginative ideas, but the bottom line is that it’s false, not real, and my advice to people is don’t get mixed up in cults and false religions but seek out the true and living God and try to honour him with all your heart. You can do that by reading the Bible.”

Kirk’s story is fairly unique in the world of Hollywood. Playing cute and snarky teen Mike Seaver on the “Growing Pains” show propelled Cameron to atmospheric heights of popularity in the teen world of celebrity worship, but unlike his peers, Kirk didn’t use this to propel him to great levels of fame, but instead found religion and pursued a career inside his faith.

While this made him an outcast in Hollywood, he continued a television career, but not as a teen heartthrob, but rather an evangelical minister. Here’s more about Kirk’s ministry career from his Wiki page:

Cameron states that he used to be an atheist, but when he was 17, during the height of his career on Growing Pains, he developed a belief in God.[3][4] After converting to evangelical Christianity, he began to protest what he perceived as immorality in Growing Pains, ostracizing himself from his fellow cast members. He did not invite them to his wedding. A decade later, Cameron agreed to appear in a Growing Pains TV movie, and apologized to his TV family, attributing his prior behavior to his lack of maturity.

Cameron currently partners with fellow evangelist Ray Comfort in training Christians in evangelism. The two have a ministry together called The Way of the Master, which includes a television/video series, a multimedia website, and a live daily radio show The Way of the Master Radio Show with Minnesota talk show host Todd Friel.

Obviously Kirk has a motive here in take shots a Scientology; he’s an evangelical Christian. This however, does not make him incorrect. Scientology is a CULT, and I would caution those interested in the organization after reading about Tom Cruise or Will Smith being followers, to do some research. Cults like Scientology end up taking more than just your money, they can also ruin your life.

Kirk, while you may be a bit extreme for my tastes these days, I still appreciate you speaking out about the dangers of Scientology. Every little bit helps.
